Coming up – Hardy Heron
I have just got myself dual boot as Feisty Fawn and right now I am upgrading to the beta release of Hardy Heron. For the people who don’t know what I am talking. Well, Feisty Fawn and Hardy Heron happen to be the releases of Ubuntu a community based Linux distro. Linux is an operating system that is open source.
The reason I got on to Ubuntu as dual boot OS is for the fact that I have Vista running on my laptop already and I’ve been slaved to it. I cannot tell you the misery I am facing. I am so slaved to Vista that I am not able to install even XP on my system. Talk about a dual boot with vista or just a clean XP installation, nothing is able to convince vista to accept another windows OS.
It used to get install earlier bot as clean install and as a dual boot with XP (in fact once I even had Vista, XP and Ubuntu). But I don’t know what’s gone into it. Can’t accept another Windows OS. I have read a little about this on online and from what I’ve heard that the reason for not being able to install XP is:
- As I have upgraded my BIOS. This could be a potential reason along with the two below.
- I have a bad DVD drive. Don’t ask me how does it matter.
- I have just chipped in another GB of RAM in the extra slot I had and hence it is causing my DVD to behave in a weired way.
Anyways, for now I am happy to be back on Ubuntu as the dual boot. What I have decided is that I’ll try to write multiple posts on how I am going to optimize and customize my new baby (Ubuntu). So keep an eye on upcoming posts. One of the first post inline is to give a detailed feature (and feature enhancement) of Ubuntu 8.04 (I know lot of us expect a lot from this new release).
As a starting point, the most easiest way to upgrade your version of Ubuntu is:
- Hit Alt+F2
- update-manager --devel-release
- You'll get an upgrade window that has a button named check.
- Once you hit the buttom you'll get another button that says upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 beta.
- Hit the button and your upgrade process will start.
- Be patient, it'll take time depending on the connection of your Internet.
Flirt with the new upgrade and I’ll be glad to see comments on what you like and what you don’t in the new release.
