Free AVG Anti-Virus for Ubuntu
One of the reason apart from other 1000 for me to use Linux is that I don’t have to worry about installing an Anti-Virus. Not that it’s totally protected from viruses but if you are smart you wont end up getting one. Just don’t do things with super user priveleges unless you know what you are doing.
Just to see how it works I tried installing AVG anti-virus on my machine on Ubuntu and it looks good. Installation is pretty easy and the interface is pretty intuitive for using. Let’s see how to get it working on Ubuntu.
Homepage
Installation
1. Download free AVG version for Linux from here. I chose the deb version for my ubuntu.
2. Double click the downloaded deb file, enter your sudo password and click install.

This should install AVG on your Ubuntu machine. In order to start/launch AVG, you can go to Applications > Accessories > AVG for Linux Workstations

Although you can run the test without using super privilege.

In order to update the version you’ll have to start AVG with super privileges. To do so, open terminal and type the following:
sudo avggui
Enter your password and you are good to update AVG.

How about AMD 64 Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop?
I am afraid Chino that there is n0 x64 version of this anti-virus. You can check the official link for availability at http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afl. However, you should get this feature for AMD with BitDefender which is free as well for Ubuntu. Please check the linkhttp://techreviews.in/installing-free-bitdefender-anti-virus-on-ubuntu-904/

did 1 & 2 above i.e.
1. downloaded .deb from http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afl
2. via gdebi (local installer in ubuntu904, where once downloaded it asked for sudo password to continue by hitting ‘install’ button
it successfully installed, or at least it told me so BUT it does NOT appear in ‘Applications | Accessories’!!??
so, please, where to from here???

Same problem. Installed in Ubuntu 9.04 and no avggui file is available.

Same problem (9.04): AVG does not appear in “Applications”, avggui is not found. Nor package installer does report it in “Included Files”. It runs from terminal, finds threats but unable to heal them. “man” reports –clean unavailable for this version.
Any suggestions how to make gui working or heal infections via terminal?

Same problem (Ubuntu 9.04 64bit): AVG does not appear in “Applicationsâ€, avggui is not found. Nor package installer does report it in “Included Files”. However, there is a process/daemon called “avgscand that is running. Any idea how to uninstall it?
I tried also BitDefender and it works very well.

I downloaded and installed it.
The program does NOT show up under “Applications > Accessories > AVG for Linux Workstations”, nor in any other place.
In terminal “sudo avggui” gives “command unknown” or something similar.
I used Synaptic Package Manager to completely remove it.
By the way, I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.
