Installing KDE4 on Windows : Step by step Guide
Windows as we know is host to a large number of applications and every day we have knew applications being
developed for it. But the Window applications are not open source as opposed to Linux. Linux applications are open source and have a port available for windows. So windows has its own applications as well as those of Linux as well.
What is KDE ?
With qt4 being released , a platform was released under GPL for all platforms, so now all Qt applications can be ported to windows. Now we can have functioning build of KDE for windows with an easy to use installer.
KDE stands for K Desktop Environment and this is free software that provides an easy to use and application rich desktop environment. KDE’s origins are rooted in Linux but the latest release brings with it support for both Windows and Mac.
This means to a limited extent we can get a KDE experience on windows. The KDE environment for Windows is not exactly the same as windows, rather it consists of certain applications of KDE. It uses KDE shell but with far limited functionality , it one can’t think of replacing the windows environment with KDE environment.
Different applications in KDE are available in separate packages , which share dependencies. It saves time and effort as two applications which may use some similar functionalities , the common stuff is installed only once.
Installation
The latest KDE4 for windows can be downloaded and installed using a installer from http://windows.kde.org/
After downloading the installer follow the given steps.
1. Install from internet option is already selected. If not select this option and click next.

2. Browse to choose a destination folder.

3. The ‘end user’ option is already selected. Click next to proceed.

4. Choose a path for installation files of KDE4

5. Configure how you connect to internet. You may use use IE or Firefox settings for ease.

6. Select a mirror and download the packages.

7. Pick the latest release.

8. Choose and select application which you wish to keep.

9. The installer then downloads the necessary packages.

10. Now the actual installation begins.

11. Thats it! Installation is done and KDE4 application can be launched from Windows start menu.

After installation all KDE4 applications will be available in programs menu folder. Now you can start using KDE4 on windows.
