With introduction of email delegation as a new feature, google provides another option besides ‘multiple sign in’ to access more than one gmail account at a time. This feature lets any other email address read your emails, if you allow them to.

It was a major problem for users with more than one gmail account to switch accounts. One had to sign out of one account and sign in into another account. This problem was solved when google introduced the feature of ‘multiple sign in’. If you activate this option, you can switch accounts with just one click being in the same browser. But now, there is another option to make it even simpler and read the emails of your other accounts in the same inbox. Google has introduced the feature of email delegation.

Although this feature introduced by Google aims to let any other gmail users to access your email account and read and respond to emails on your behalf. So, it is great for those who would like someone to read and reply to their email on their behalf. This feature can also be used to read emails of more than one gmail accounts by the same person in a single inbox by activating this feature for all but one gmail account and choosing that one gmail account as the account where delegated emails reach. Thus it may prove to be better from multiple sign in in sense that it does not require you to sign into the accounts, rather it fetches emails of all accounts into a single inbox.

In general, the delegation feature allows you any designated user to read, reply or delete your emails. It also enables to access the contacts of the account. It won’t allow the person to alter your password or account setting. Also it won’t allow log in to Google chat of the delegated account.

Enabling delegation feature

1. Click on Settings link on your gmail window

2. Click on ‘Accounts and Imports‘ tab. Under Grant Access to your account, click on add another account

3. Enter the email address of the person whom you would like to be able to access your account. If you want to manage your multiple gmail accounts, add one of your gmail accounts from which you would like to read all your emails.

4. You will see a confirmation message. Click on email to grant access.

5. An email will be sent to the account explaining him that you have granted access to him. Now in case, you added your gmail account as monitoring primary address, you will receive the email and access to your delegated account.

When you’ll have access to more than one account, you’ll be able to access any of them from the account selector in the right top corner

Each account will be opened in new window to ease the distinction between the accounts. Signing out of your main account will lead to signing you out of all the accounts.

A small video from google to explain the process.

Note that this feature is introduced to allow other users to manage your account but as explained in the points above you can configure it to use it to manage all your gmail accounts.

Now Gmail has come up with a new feature that notifies you when it feels a suspicious login has occurred.

Google had recently launched the feature of remote sign out and information about recent account activity to halp better manage the account. Now Google has come up with another addition wherein it notifies you as soon as it suspects any suspicious login in your account. The warning which will be posted by them would be “Warning: We believe your account was last accessed from…” along with the geographic region that can best associate with the access.

If you want to further see the details of the message or warning click on ‘details’ . You can change your password from the same window if you believe your account has been hacked. If you know it was legitimate access you can click “Dismiss” to remove the message.

Google keeps on coming with more and better security features one after another, probably thats why it is the most popular email service provider. Lets hope this feature can help out many people who have been troubled by hacking of their accounts

Although Google has been providing offline service since January it recently came up with a new addition of sending attachments in gmail even though when you are offline. Seems untrue, read on…

In offline mode of gmail, one can create email messages and send them even if you are offline. After the addition of new feature which allows attachments to be sent in the offline mode too, one doesn’t need to alter the way one used to send attachments. You can still send attachments the same way you used to , just attach them and send them along. It works the same in online or offline mode.

If offline feature is enabled, the mail goes through the outbox , regardless of whether you are online or offline. The new feature of Google enables attachments to be attached and sent in the same way as normal email messages in offline mode. The fact that gmail now uses outbox to send mails allows Gmail to capture all attachments, even if you suddenly get disconnected from network. If you’re online, your mail will quickly be sent along to its destination.

But you can’t send inline images in emails if using it in offline mode.

Steps to enable the offline mode feature of gmail

1. Visit the Labs tab page.

2. Select Enable next to Offline Gmail.

3. Click save changes. After the browser reloads there appears a small ” Offline ” link on the top right hand corner next to your username. Click this link to start the offline set up process.

4. After you click on the link the process of activating offline feature will begin and installation process will start.

5. Also you need to install Gears to enable the offline feature of Gmail to run on your browser.

6. After that the browser will restart and you are ready to use the ‘offline’ gmail features including the offline attachment feature of it.

I don’t know if you have noticed but Gmail, now has integrated Google labs in it. The purpose is as simple as the purpose of Google Labs. It allows you to test features which are under testing. If you haven’t seen it you might want to see it under the settings link in your gmail. Once you go into the settings page, you’ll find a new tab that’s been added called Labs. Under this there are various new features which you can enable and disable. By default all the features which are present in the Labs tab are all disabled. However, there are some really cool features which you want to turn on.

Before you do that, read carefully, the message from the the Gmail team:

“Gmail Labs: our testing ground for experimental features
Gmail engineers come up with new ideas all the time. Gmail Labs is our place to try them out and get your feedback. None of these features are really ready for prime time yet, so they may change, break or disappear at any time.

Learn more about Gmail Labs
If (when) a Labs feature breaks, and you’re having trouble getting into your account, there’s an escape hatch — just go to http://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=0 and Labs will be temporarily disabled.”

Most of the them are self explanatory. Few of them might conflict with you Firefox features. Especially, the mouse gestures. If you are using any kind of mouse gesture extension on Firefox, think twice before you turn on the mouse gestures feature in Labs under gmail. I really liked, Hide Unread Counts feature. This feature when enabled doesn’t show the number of unread mails in your inbox. I had close to 3000 unread mails (courtesy some news letter, from where I’ve not unsubscribed because of laziness). Now when I enable Hide Unread Counts I manage to avoid embarrassment of not reading my mails.

I found quick links feature also of great help. Feel free to experiment with them because they are there to be experimented on.

I got up in the morning and the first thing I did (which I usually do) is log into my gmail account. I saw something cool. While loading Gmail, it gives an option of logging into HTML version for slow connections on the fly. Something like this:

Earlier Gmail used to show loading…

Seperating the snap shot for better visibility, it would look something like this:

The one above is visible on the top left of the screen replacing the famous loading…

Th image below is the one seen on the bottom right and has to option to load the HTML version of Gmail on slow connection.

I think this is a good improvement and gives a better look and feel for Gmail. Looks too Ajaxy!

I don’t want to make another post for the following graphic. It’s something I stumbled on while going through blogohblog.com. I think it’s pretty cool. However, Jai the owner of blogohblog.com does some great posts relating to SEO, Blogging, WordPress and WordPress themes. You might wanna spend sometime on his blog to check out the great stuff.
