It is one of the most used and highly rated translation service on the net. With integration with browsers and translation of documents, the service has proved to be really useful for number of users. Google now has added another feather to its cap. It has now come put with an innovative concept of Google goggles.

With this application, you can now translate foreign text that you capture (and crop) with your phone’s camera, potentially helping with signage, papers. It can prove to be really beneficial for travellers travelling to a country of different language.

Here’s how it works:
  • Point your phone at a word or phrase. Use the region of interest button to draw a box around specific words
  • Press the shutter button
  • If Goggles recognizes the text, it will give you the option to translate
  • Press the translate button to select the source and destination languages.

The app was already in the market. It can can read English, French, Italian, German and Spanish and can translate to many more languages. The new update has quite a few additions. Goggles v1.1 features improved barcode recognition, a larger corpus of artwork, recognition of many more products and logos, an improved user interface, and the ability to initiate visual searches using images in your phone’s photo gallery.

The translation quality might not be as good as you experience on the online service but if you just need a broad translation to understand the context and basic meaning, goggles would provide good enough results. The app is available for Android phones running at least Android 1.6

This tool has proved to be a lifeline for many requiring quick translations. Google also had recently released a desktop tool of Google Translate. Now Google has come up with 3 new features along with the all new look and feel.

The three new services added to Google Translate are :

  • Real Time Translations : Now one doesn’t have to write the whole text first and then press the ‘Translate’ button for translation. With addition of this feature , Google will simultaneously translate the text you type into the chosen language. This feature would prove to be extremely useful for people when typing a letter or a document , so that one may change the text as he is typing after seeing the translated text instead of typing in the whole text and then altering the mistakes.

  • Read and Write in any language : If you want to convert text from a language but are unable to read the characters of the language , just paste the characters of the language into the translation tool and the clicking on ‘Show Romanization’ button will convert the text symbols into roman script. So one may know the pronunciation of the symbols in the language and it may be a very method of learning the language. This feature is for all non-Roman languages except for Hebrew, Arabic and Persian.

  • Text to Speech : When translating into English, you can now also hear translations in spoken form by clicking the Speaker Icon. There are quite a few speech tools but a speech tool with option of over 51 languages along with all other added features wrapped in 1 tool would not be possible other than Google Translate.

Although not a 100% foolproof. It’s still the service I like to use when I want to translate text/website page from one language to another. I use the Google’s web service to translate text. However, I know there can be un-imaginable number of ways to achieve the same. We can also use Google translation service using some desktop utilities.

AIRTranslate is an AIR desktop application for Google Translate service. It’s pretty easy to install. Just make sure you have Adobe AIR installed on your machine. Because it’s adobe air based, it’s cross platform. One of the best features is it auto-detects the language and translate it to your desired language.
