Windows as we know is host to a large number of applications and every day we have knew applications being developed for it. But the Window applications are not open source as opposed to Linux. Linux applications are open source and have a port available for windows. So windows has its own applications as well as those of Linux as well.

What is KDE ?

With qt4 being released , a platform was released under GPL for all platforms, so now all Qt applications can be ported to windows. Now we can have functioning build of KDE for windows with an easy to use installer.

KDE stands for K Desktop Environment and this is free software that provides an easy to use and application rich desktop environment. KDE’s origins are rooted in Linux but the latest release brings with it support for both Windows and Mac.

This means to a limited extent we can get a KDE experience on windows. The KDE environment for Windows is not exactly the same as windows, rather it consists of certain applications of KDE. It uses KDE shell but with far limited functionality , it one can’t think of replacing the windows environment with KDE environment.

Different applications in KDE are available in separate packages , which share dependencies. It saves time and effort as two applications which may use some similar functionalities , the common stuff is installed only once.

Installation

The latest KDE4Â for windows can be downloaded and installed using a installer from http://windows.kde.org/

After downloading the installer follow the given steps.

1. Install from internet option is already selected. If not select this option and click next.

2. Browse to choose a destination folder.

3. The ‘end user’ option is already selected. Click next to proceed.

4. Choose a path for installation files of KDE4

Keyboard shortcuts can be very useful in reducing the your time in carrying out day to day activities in Linux. Although it is not possible to learn each and every keyboard shortcut but if you make it a practise to use some of the very common ones it would create a lot of difference in you Linux experience.

Here are a few useful Linux Keyboard shortcuts :

1. Arrow up or Arrow down : The up pr down key when used in a terminal windows allows to cycle through history the commands used in the terminal windows. Using this shortcut you don’t have to retype the commands and also you don’t need to remember what commands you issued earlier in the session.

2. Alt + Arrow Key : In Linux pager allows you to have multiple desktops at one time. Instead of moving the mouse to the window to switch between different desktops , you can use Alt + Arrow keys to switch between the different desktops. This works in all desktop environments and window managers.

3. Alt + Tab : This shortcut allows you to cycle through different windows and stop on the window which you want to open. Instead of using mouse to click on the window you want to open , you can use this shortcut to good effect. This works in most dektop environments.

4. Ctrl + Alt + Del : If you are stuck and everything else fails to work , you can use this shortcut to immediately restart your computer . Though you will loose all your unsaved data , so you must use this command carefully.

5. Ctrl + Alt + Backspace : You can use this shortcut when X isn’t responding or some program has held up your desktop and nothing is responding. This shortcut logs you out of X and takes you back to login screen. It works with all desktop environments and window managers.

6. Ctrl + Alt + F* : This is a useful shortcut which switches between various virtual terminals. You can use this shortcut to switch to terminals 1,2,3 etc with shortcut Ctrl + Alt + F1, Ctrl + Alt + F2, Ctrl + Alt + F3 etc. This will open a text based terminal window which can be used for debugging and terminating applications.

7. Ctrl + C : When you are working in a terminal window , you can kill a process which you are following with Ctrl + C command.

8. Ctrl + R : This is a useful command research option. When you use this shortcut , you are prompted to enter a character or a string of characters. You’ll get all the command you may have used earlier with the search character in it or the combination of search characters. Once the search result appears on the screen, you can press enter to execute the command.

9. Ctrl + Z : This will zombie an application. If you want to put the application in the background but not kill the process and get back to the terminal , use this command to put the process back in the background.

10. Ctrl + a and Ctrl + e : When working in a text editor , you can get to the end of the line using Ctrl + a and beginning of the line using Ctrl + e. These sh0rtcuts do not work in GUI environment.

Samsung has launched a new mobile phone which has an OS based on Linux. This phone is a first major linux based handset in recent times and is a bold step by Samsung. The phone called H1 and also another variant called M1 are being launched by Samsung in association with Vodafone and are currently being launched in U.K.

The H1 has a brilliant 3.5” WVGA AMOLED displaywith a host of other features which makes it an interesting option to look at. The features of fast HSDPA at 7.2 mbps and Wifi connectivity allow easy connectivity to net on the go. The special interface provides quick and easy access to social networking sites. Some of the other features include 5 MP camera, GPRS, GPS, Push email, HD video capability and media player with support of various media codecs. It has a 16 Gb of internal memory and slot for micro Sd card ( 16 Gb) to allow user to store different multimedia files.

The other set M1 has HSDPA, 3.2 TFT Touchscreen Display, Push email, 3 M.P. Camera and 1 Gb of rxpandable memory. This set would be available in 3 colour variants.

The advantages of a Linux based OS are also there. The LiMo is more flexible , broader focus than other exisitng operating systems. All the advantages of linux also apply here. It would be interesting to see how this Os puts up against the existing market leaders. Is this going to intensify the race to best OS or will the exisitng OS still rule the roost ? Another question is how will samsung justify its use of different OS in different phones and convince users that both are worth spending on.

Here’s a video :

One of the reason apart from other 1000 for me to use Linux is that I don’t have to worry about installing an Anti-Virus. Not that it’s totally protected from viruses but if you are smart you wont end up getting one. Just don’t do things with super user priveleges unless you know what you are doing.

Just to see how it works I tried installing AVG anti-virus on my machine on Ubuntu and it looks good. Installation is pretty easy and the interface is pretty intuitive for using. Let’s see how to get it working on Ubuntu.

Homepage

http://avg.com

Installation

1. Download free AVG version for Linux from here. I chose the deb version for my ubuntu.

2. Double click the downloaded deb file, enter your sudo password and click install.

This should install AVG on your Ubuntu machine. In order to start/launch AVG, you can go to Applications > Accessories > AVG for Linux Workstations

Although you can run the test without using super privilege.

In order to update the version you’ll have to start AVG with super privileges. To do so, open terminal and type the following:

sudo avggui

Enter your password and you are good to update AVG.

Being a student and in research, I have always tried to use technology for making a point and this statement is used with literal connotation. One of my favorite way of engaging an audience is to use mindmaps. In this tutorial we’ll see how to get an open source software for mindmapping. Xmind is close to being a perfect mind manager for Linux, Windows and Mac.

But before we go into the details of installation let’s see what a Mind Mapping software is. Following a description from Wikipedia:

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing.

The elements of a given mind map are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information. Mind maps may also aid recall of existing memories.

Home Page

http://www.xmind.net/

Description

XMind, combined with online sharing service, provides a revolutionary way to enable both team brainstorming and personal mind mapping. With this major upgrade, we bring Web 2.0 concepts on community sharing into a popular desktop application. New Gantt view allows project managers to easily track project tasks and schedules. You’ll find many more useful and time-saving functions in XMind product family.

Installing Xmind

Installing Xmind on Ubuntu is as easy as it can get. All you need is to download the deb file and double click it to install it. You can download XMind MindMap deb for Ubuntu from here.

Once you download the deb file just double click to install it.

Once you have installed it you can start it by going to Applications > Office > XMind

Following is how the XMind looks like:

Window decorations are provided by window managers to improve the usability of a multi-windowed desktop. They typically consist of a title bar along the top of each window and a minimal border around the other three sides, although this can often be varied upon if the user wishes.

In the predominant layout for modern window decorations, the top bar contains a title and buttons which perform windowing-related actions such as minimizing, maximizing and closing . The border exists primarily to allow the user to resize the window.
