One of the reason apart from other 1000 for me to use Linux is that I don’t have to worry about installing an Anti-Virus. Not that it’s totally protected from viruses but if you are smart you wont end up getting one. Just don’t do things with super user priveleges unless you know what you are doing.

Just to see how it works I tried installing AVG anti-virus on my machine on Ubuntu and it looks good. Installation is pretty easy and the interface is pretty intuitive for using. Let’s see how to get it working on Ubuntu.

Homepage

http://avg.com

Installation

1. Download free AVG version for Linux from here. I chose the deb version for my ubuntu.

2. Double click the downloaded deb file, enter your sudo password and click install.

This should install AVG on your Ubuntu machine. In order to start/launch AVG, you can go to Applications > Accessories > AVG for Linux Workstations

Although you can run the test without using super privilege.

In order to update the version you’ll have to start AVG with super privileges. To do so, open terminal and type the following:

sudo avggui

Enter your password and you are good to update AVG.

Being a student and in research, I have always tried to use technology for making a point and this statement is used with literal connotation. One of my favorite way of engaging an audience is to use mindmaps. In this tutorial we’ll see how to get an open source software for mindmapping. Xmind is close to being a perfect mind manager for Linux, Windows and Mac.

But before we go into the details of installation let’s see what a Mind Mapping software is. Following a description from Wikipedia:

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing.

The elements of a given mind map are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information. Mind maps may also aid recall of existing memories.

Home Page

http://www.xmind.net/

Description

XMind, combined with online sharing service, provides a revolutionary way to enable both team brainstorming and personal mind mapping. With this major upgrade, we bring Web 2.0 concepts on community sharing into a popular desktop application. New Gantt view allows project managers to easily track project tasks and schedules. You’ll find many more useful and time-saving functions in XMind product family.

Installing Xmind

Installing Xmind on Ubuntu is as easy as it can get. All you need is to download the deb file and double click it to install it. You can download XMind MindMap deb for Ubuntu from here.

Once you download the deb file just double click to install it.

Once you have installed it you can start it by going to Applications > Office > XMind

Following is how the XMind looks like:

It’s been a while I blogged because few things have kept me busy. I plan to get back to blogging on a regular basis. Up untill now I was using ksnapshot for screenshots in Ubuntu and I was pretty satisfied with it. Because it’s a KDE based application I was not too happy using it on my Gnome desktop.

There’s been some talk about shutter offlate and I gave it a try myself. My honest opinion, it’s a great tool and has a great potential.

Home Page

http://shutter-project.org/

Description

Shutter is a feature-rich screenshot program. You can take a screenshot of a specific area, window, your whole screen, or even of a website – apply different effects to it, draw on it to highlight points, and then upload to an image hosting site, all within one window.

Shutter used to be called GScrot.

I am quite glad that the name’s been changed!

Installation

The installation is pretty easy. Either you can add PPA to your repository list, or you can do it easy way by downloading the deb file and double clicking it.

Go to GetDeb and download the two files namely libgoo-canvas-perl and shutter. Install both the files by double clicking them.

This will install shutter on your Ubuntu distro. Following is a snapshot of shutter itself taken using shutter!

Recommended features for upcoming versions

Image editor for editing the screenshot taken. Should be unobstrusive like snagit for windows.

The beauty of this client is that it supports almost all the IM services like google talk and yahoo messenger. I am also sure that there are many of you who use facebook on a regular basis along with using facebook chat service.

Now wouldn’t it be amazing to integrate facebook chat with Pidgin so that you don’t have to login to facebook to just use the chat service. Well now there’s more than hope to achieve this functionality. All you need is a pidgin-facebookchat plugin and integrate it with pidgin. If you are on Ubuntu or similar debian based linux distro it’s even more easy. All you have to do is follow the steps below:

1. Download the pidgin-facebookchat plugin from here.

2. Double click the deb file you just downloaded and click install.

3. Once installed, restart your pidgin client.

4. Click Accounts and click Manage Accounts. In the accounts window click Add.

5. Select Facebook from the protocol drop down and provide your facebook credentials and click save.

That’s it. Following is how your Pidgin will look once you have added the facebook chat plugin.

Hope this will make your facebook and pidgin experience much better.

I am not sure how many of you felt the need to mount an ISO disc on Ubuntu or similar debian based linux distros. I did and hence I explored to find that there are various ways to mount an ISO file on Ubuntu. But nothing will ever be able to beat a non-geeky, non-script, non-terminal way of being able to mount and unmount ISO drives. However, some other day we’ll also see other way (using terminal) to achieve the same. Let’s get started with the graphical way. This involves a GUI utility called as Gmount-iso.

Mount and Unmount ISO files in Ubuntu using the GUI tool Gmount-iso

To be able to use GMount-iso, we’ll have to install it as it doesn’t come as a default installation. Let’s see how to do that. Make sure you are connected to Internet.

1. Start the Synaptic Package Manager by going to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager.

2. In the search box search for gmountiso.

3. Click on the only result and mark it for installation and click Apply.

This should install Gmount-iso on your Ubuntu. You are now all set to mount and unmount ISO files.

Mounting and unmounting ISO using Gmount-iso

1. This pretty intuitive. All you have to do is start the application by going to Application > System Tools > Gmount-iso.

2. Now click open and navigate to the location of ISO file to be mounted.

3. Click the provide the mount point. In my case it is /media/cdrom.

4. Click Mount to mount the ISO file.

In order to unmount just click unmount to unmount the ISO file.

With a 6 month release cycle of Ubuntu, the excitement never goes down. I remember not too long ago I installed Intrepid Ibex on my machine and right now I am using Jaunty Jackalope Alpha 2. I am also very excited about 15 Jan 2009 when the alpha 3 will be rolled out.

The great news is that there’s been a lot of new things which will be part of the new release of Ubuntu 9.04 code named Jaunty Jackalope. For example a brand new kernel namely 2.6.28 which will have a support for ext 4. Along with a long list of new features Jaunty Jackalope is all set to rock the operating system market and will surely give some run for the money to much hyped Windows 7.

We are going to see how in easy steps you can get Jaunty Jackalope Alpha 2 (as it stands today) on your machine. The upgrading is really simple.

1. Launch the Run prompt by hitting ALT+F2.

2. Type “update-manager -d” without quotes and in the window click Upgrade.

You should be connected to Internet

Caution:It’s not really advised to upgrade to alpha releases or for that matter beta releases and especially not on a production machine. So please make sure you backup your data before you upgrade.
